What are the four pillars?

Each pillar is one unit of time written in the sexagenary cycle: a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. Your year of birth gives the year pillar, the solar month gives the month pillar, the calendar day gives the day pillar, and the two-hour period of your birth gives the hour pillar.

The four pillars are not four separate readings. They are one chart, and almost everything in BaZi is about how the eight characters relate to each other — which elements support which, which clash, and which are hidden inside the branches.

What each pillar governs

The year pillar is traditionally read as ancestry, early environment and the conditions you were born into — the part of your life you did not choose. The month pillar is the strongest single pillar in most systems: it carries family, upbringing, career and the seasonal element that decides whether your Day Master is supported.

The day pillar is you. Its stem is the Day Master, the reference point every other character is judged against, and its branch is traditionally read as the spouse palace. The hour pillar covers later life, children, and what you produce — it is also the pillar most affected by an inaccurate birth time.

Why the month pillar carries the most weight

The month pillar is set by the solar term, not by the calendar month. Someone born on 4 February can fall in either the previous month pillar or the next one depending on the exact moment the term changes that year — which is why a chart calculated from the Gregorian month alone is often wrong.

It matters because the month branch sets the season, and the season decides how much support your Day Master has. Two charts identical except for the month pillar can read as strong and weak respectively, and that single difference flips which of the Five Elements are favourable.

How this chart is calculated

The stems and branches are derived from the calendar — solar terms for the month pillar, the continuous day count for the day pillar, and the Day Master plus clock hour for the hour pillar. The same birth details always produce the same eight characters; nothing here is generated by a language model.
