How the Five Elements are counted

Each of the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches maps to exactly one element, so the eight visible characters give you a count out of eight. That is the number most "five elements calculator" tools show, and it is the first row above.

Every Earthly Branch also stores one to three hidden stems, each with its own element. They carry less weight than the visible characters but they are not decorative — a branch can quietly supply the element a chart appears to be missing. The second row above includes them.

Missing elements are not automatically a problem

A chart with no Water is not a chart with something wrong with it. What matters is whether the elements your Day Master needs are present and reachable. A chart can be missing an element it never needed, and it can be full of an element that actively works against it.

This is why the favourable elements shown above are derived from the Day Master and its strength, not from which element has the lowest count. A strong Day Master wants the elements that spend it; a weak one wants the elements that feed it. The "useful god" (用神) in classical texts is exactly this: the element the chart most needs, not the one it has least of.

The generating and controlling cycles

The five elements relate to each other in two cycles. In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water grows Wood. In the controlling cycle, Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

Those two cycles are the whole mechanism. Whether a character in your chart supports you, drains you or restrains you is decided by where it sits relative to your Day Master in these two loops — and the Ten Gods are simply the names given to those five positions.

What to do with the result

Your favourable elements are the practical output of a BaZi reading. They inform which directions, seasons, colours and activities tend to go with the grain of your chart, and they are what makes some ten-year luck pillars feel supportive and others feel like wading upstream.
