What is the Day Master?

A BaZi chart has eight characters. One of them is you: the stem sitting on top of the day pillar. Everything else in the chart is read relative to it — which characters support you, which drain you, which control you, and which you control. That is what the Ten Gods are: labels for those five relationships.

This is why two people can share seven of eight characters and get opposite readings. Change the Day Master and every relationship in the chart is renamed.

Day Master versus day pillar

The day pillar is the whole pair — stem plus branch. The Day Master is only the stem. The branch underneath is traditionally read as the spouse palace, and it also contributes hidden stems that count towards whether your Day Master is supported.

How strong or weak is decided

Of the five relationships in a chart, two support the Day Master (same element, and the element that produces it) and three spend it (the element it produces, the element it controls, and the element that controls it). Each of the eight characters is weighted — the month branch counts most, hidden stems count partially — and the supporting share is compared against a threshold.

The threshold here is 40%, not 50%. Two supporting categories out of five means an evenly distributed chart naturally lands near two fifths: across 3,000 randomly generated charts the median supporting share measured 0.394. Setting it at 45% would classify 62% of all charts as weak, which tells you nothing.

Strong or weak is not good or bad. It decides which of the Five Elements are favourable for you: a strong Day Master wants elements that spend it, a weak one wants elements that support it.

What to do with your Day Master

The Day Master plus its strength is the smallest useful summary of a chart — it is what a practitioner establishes first, before looking at anything else. From it you get your favourable elements, which in turn drive most practical BaZi advice: colours, directions, timing, and which luck pillars will feel supportive.
